This NCTE project involves the interlinking of 9 senior primary schools in the Portmarnock and surrounding areas to deliver services including learning applications and broadband internet access to the linked schools in order to achieve better ICT integration on a whole school basis. All the schools are primary schools of which there are over 3,000 in Ireland. Consistent feedback from primary schools in particular focus on the need to address technical and infrastructural issues, to remove ICT related barriers that exist. As a response the project will evaluate a cost effective and low maintenance ICT infrastructure model that will address the service requirements of primary schools in particular. The project involves a significant technological dimension where solutions will be applied to deliver key learning outcomes.

The main project objectives are

• To enhance the teaching and learning environment for schools by providing an enhanced and trouble free ICT infrastructure.

• To deliver a cost effective and low maintenance ICT infrastructure to a cluster of schools that will free teachers from technical constraints and allow them to focus on their key competencies of improving the teaching and learning process.

• To remove the impediments to ICT integration in schools, these include down time caused by technical issues, fear and ignorance of the technical capabilities, and the perceived burden of extra responsibilities that ill planned ICT environments bring about.

• The evaluation of the effect of the enhanced ICT environment in delivering improved ‘pedagogical practice’ within the involved schools.

• To investigate the ‘whole school’ solution potential especially in light of the preponderance of small schools in Ireland and the potential to mainstream the key project outcomes.

• To maximise the opportunity the project provides to influence and inform wider ICT practice in Irish schools.

• To fully investigate the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) benefit outcomes of the project.

• To maximise the project impact in terms of technical support models, training and collaboration among the participant schools.
